Infant Reflux Misrepresented in the Media

Infant Reflux Misrepresented in the Media
The media has a way of oversimplifying things. Look, for example, at the December 16, 2007 piece from the Baltimore Sun, Reflux Among Babies Often a Misdiagnosis. The article suggests that acid reflux in babies is "widely misdiagnosed and often overtreated with unnecessary doses of heartburn medicine developed for adults."   The piece rests on the results of a small, recently published retrospective study of the practices of...

Dr. Eisner Answers Your Questions About Acid Reflux

Can Ultram cause or worsen symptoms of GERD?   Ultram is a centrally acting pain relief medication that is commonly taken for chronic pain conditions, specifically back pain and arthritis. Ultram has many adverse effects, including gastrointestinal side effects of nausea, vomiting and constipation. These occur in 5-15% of patients taking Ultram. The effects are due to Ultram's decrease in gastrointestinal motility, slowing down... Complete news...

Dealing with Discontinued Medication

"This medication has been discontinued."   That's what our pharmacist told us the last time we went to pick up my son's prescription for Erythomycin. You may remember that Erythomycin is a common antibiotic that is often used to help individuals who may have an allergy to penicillin, and it can also help with gastric emptying for reflux patients. I wrote about how well the drug was working with my son's nasal stuffiness at... Complete news...

The Gingerbread House That Reflux Built

Long ago when my youngest daughter Rebecca was a baby, I decided it would be “fun” to make a gingerbread house with the girls. I still don’t know why I thought it was a good idea to take on such a task with a 5 year old, 3 year old and a baby who barely slept an hour at a time and was sick non stop due to Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and asthma. It just goes to show you how a mixture of exhaustion and stubbornness can... Further reading...

Yes We Can! How Moms and Dads Changed the Law

Yes We Can! How Moms and Dads Changed the Law
Remember the Obama supporters chanting, “Yes We Can!” over and over during the recent presidential campaign? Americans everywhere were getting involved in the election and political process for the first time. While I am a registered voter and try to make an informed decision in the voting booth, I seldom get involved in political activities. Last year was different because I joined other parents and helped to change the...

Another Acid Reflux Friendly Meal Idea Part I

Providing recipes for those with acid reflux can be tricky business. Individuals react differently to different foods, especially if their reflux is caused by food allergies or their reflux has caused a very sensitive stomach. However, I will keep sharing what works for my family, because as a mother of a young son with acid reflux disease, and another son who can eat anything he wants, coming up with menu ideas to suit everyone has been one... Resolve To Have Fun!

Being overweight is a strong risk factor for acid reflux disease and esophageal erosions. The risk for these disorders progressively increases with increasing weight. I suspect many of you are already well aware of these facts and would love to begin 2009 by getting in better shape. This SharePost is written for you!   Unfortunately, somewhere in the late 20th century we veered off track and started to equate exercise only with things... Further reading...

Six Reasons Not to Overlook Reflux in Your Child

Once felt to be a non-issue, childhood acid reflux is getting attention as a real problem. Here's why you shouldn't turn a blind eye to your child's symptoms:   1. Your child can't speak for herself. You as a parent are the front line in identifying the subtle signs of acid reflux in your child. And as your child's only advocate it is up to you to see to it that your child gets the care she deserves.  2... Continue reading...
